چکیده

Scientists reveal the surprising genetic identity of early human remains from roughly 400,000 years ago in Spain. The bones were first thought to belong to European Neanderthals, but analysis showed they are genetically closer to the Siberian Denisovans. Analysis of the bones challenges conventional thinking about the geographical spread of our ancient cousins, the early human species called Neanderthals and Denisovans. Until now, these sister families of early humans were thought to have resided in prehistoric Europe and Siberia, respectively. (See also: "The New Age of Exploration.") But paleontologists write in a new study that the bones of what they thought were European Neanderthals appear genetically closer to the Siberian Denisovans, as shown by maternally inherited "mitochondrial" DNA found in a fossil thighbone uncovered at Spain's Sima de los Huesos cave. "The fact that they show a mitochondrial genome sequence similar to that of Denisovans is irritating," says Matthias Meyer of Germany's Max Planck Institute

Tuberculosis & traditional medicine: fighting the oldest infectious disease, using the oldest source of medicine

It is believed that tuberculosis has been killing human beings for over 4000 years. Several reports exist of ancient Egyptian mummies having signs of tubercular decay in their bodies. After the discovery of powerful anti-TB drugs such as streptomycin, isoniazid and rifampin during 1940-70s, it was thought that TB would be gone from the face of the earth, but tuberculosis still remains one of th...

Cell Timer/Cell Clock

Like the biological clock in the body, replication of each cell type (even different cells of the same organism) follows a timing program. Abnormal function of this timer could be an alarm for a disease like cancer. DNA replication starts from a specific point on the chromosome that is called the origin of replication. In contrast to prokaryotes in which DNA replication starts from a single ...

Origins and Evaluation of DNA Damage in Infertile Individual

Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) are considered as the first line of treatment in overcoming infertility. The scope of success of these methods depends on several factors including integrity of sperm and oocyte. Obviously, paternal genomic content has an important effect on fertilization potential in infertile couples. Thus, sperm DNA damage is a genomic disorder that exists in different ...

Reassessing the environmental context of the Aitape Skull – The oldest tsunami victim in the world?

There is increasing recognition of the long-lasting effects of tsunamis on human populations. This is particularly notable along tectonically active coastlines with repeated inundations occurring over thousands of years. Given the often high death tolls reported from historical events though it is remarkable that so few human skeletal remains have been found in the numerous palaeotsunami deposi...
